Estel V. Lewis, who would have been 98 on May 27, of Soddy Daisy, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at her home. She was a native of Hamilton County and attended Daisy High School graduating in 1932. She worked at Hamilton County Nursing Home from the age of 54 to 66 in the Activity Department and was well liked by the patients and fellow employees. She was an avid sports enthusiast playing basketball in high school and managing a team playing softball for over 20 years. She was named to Sports Mother of the Year in 1960. She is a member of the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. She carried the torch for the Senior Olympics in 2010. Estel traveled to Franklin, Tennessee for the last 10 years to watch her children play ball in the Senior Olympics. She worked in her community programs and was instrumental in helping get city water piped to the Lewis Chapel Community. She was named in “Who’s Who” at Soddy Daisy Health Care while recuperating there. Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lewis; son, Van Lewis; grandson, Robin Ritchie and son-in-law, Eddie Ritchie.
Survivors include her children, Theresa, Neville, Winston, Conrad and Robert Ann; grandchildren, Kevin Ritchie (Dee Dee), Vance Ritchie, Adena Farr (Tommy), Ricky Lewis, Sharon Farrow (Larry), Sonya Jemley, Stephanie Johnston (Spencer), Nevell Lewis, Amy Williams (Stan), Brent Lewis, Clifton Lewis and Rexanne Brown (Greg) along with several great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ted Painter and Rev. Don Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Varner Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 11:00 to 3:00 p.m..
