- [S16] Obituary.
September 9, 1923 - March 24, 2011
Everette Nelson “Red” Smith was reunited with his cherished wife, Frances, and his Redeemer on Thursday March 24, 2011. He was born on September 9, 1923 and was preceded in death by his parents, Walt and Sarah; his brothers, Vernon and Jack; and his wife of 64 years, Frances. “Red” was that rare individual who, like David in Scripture, combined a warrior’s heart with a warmth and generosity of spirit that embraced everyone with whom he came in contact. The strength of his character was never more in evidence than in the last few years of his life when he bore with humor and quiet courage physical trials that would have overwhelmed most other men.
“Red” worked at Combustion Engineering, Inc., for 39 years, starting as a welder in the shop and moving later in his career into the Welding Engineering department. Upon his retirement from CE in 1981, he taught welding at East Ridge High School for three years. While working at Combustion he was called to the ministry and he served for extended periods as pastor of Suck Creek Baptist Church and Lone Oak Baptist Church on Signal Mountain. He was a lifetime member of both the Daisy Masonic Lodge and the Lookout Commandery.
He is survived by his sons Terry Smith (Sheila) and David Smith (Sandy), his daughter Peggy Henry (Jeff), and his beloved grandchildren, Amy Tallis (Chris) and Christopher Henry.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the Cardiac Care Unit at Erlanger Hospital and Hospice of Chattanooga for their care and attention during Red’s final illness.
The funeral service will be 3:00 P.M. Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Calvin Nunley officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00 TO 9:00 Friday.
