Virgil Varner Loftis
Virgil Varner Loftis, 90, a lifelong resident of Hamilton County, died, September 1, 2007.
Mr. Loftis was a graduate of Soddy-Daisy High School, Class of 1935. A United States Army veteran serving during World War II, he was a tank instructor. He managed several Home Stores in both Chattanooga and Dayton, worked as a bulldozer operator and a fireman at the Volunteer Army Ammunitions Plant, co-owned Layne & Loftis Gulf Service Station in Daisy, was a Hamilton County contract school bus driver and later retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier.
He served on the Soddy-Daisy Commission as vice mayor, was a member of the Daisy Masonic Lodge #706 F&AM and a life member of the American Legion Post #107.
His wife, Irene Layne Loftis, preceded him in death.
He is survived by two sons, Virgil Don (Kathryn M.) Loftis, William David (Cathy V.) Loftis, all of Soddy-Daisy; grandchildren, David Brown Loftis, Dana Layne (Scott) Chadwell, Darla Dawn Loftis, April Ruth (Matt) Lewis, Chad (Natalie) Crowe and Heather Crowe; sisters, Verna Benton, Newell Gann and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Mitch McClure officiating.
Interment will follow in Poe Cemetery.
Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.
