Ruth Davis Elliott, 86, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away on December 11, 2014.
Born October 8, 1928 in Sale Creek, she graduated from Sale Creek High School as valedictorian of the Class of 1946. She also was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga. She worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority and then embarked on a 31 year career of teaching in the Hamilton County School system, primarily at Ganns Middle Valley Elementary. In the early 1980's, she was made an honorary life member of that school's PTA in well-deserved recognition of her years of devotion to the school and its students.
Upon retirement, she became an avid genealogist, and as a result of her research became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy , Daughters of American Colonists, and related organizations. She had her family designated as one of the First Families of Tennessee. She also traveled extensively, visiting Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, the Caribbean, the American West, Canada and Alaska.
She was a member of Soddy United Methodist Church for several decades, and recently celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel M. Davis, Sr. and Hulda Cunningham Davis, her sisters, Wilsie Ray, Polly Davis and Mildred Davis, and her brothers, Tom Davis and Dan Davis.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Elliott, of Soddy Daisy, her sons, Sam (Karen) Elliott of Signal Mountain, and Jeff (Karen) Elliott of Soddy Daisy, four granddaughters, Lindsey Elliott, Mary Claire Elliott, Julie (Garrett) Hawks and Sarah Anne Elliott, and two great-granddaughters, Erin Hawks and Savannah Hawks.
The funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Reverend J. Todd Kingrea officiating. Burial will follow in Varner Cemetery. Visitation is 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.
