Penney - Fred , 81, of Rt. 3, Soddy, Tennessee, died at the residenceFriday afternoon. He was a lifelong resident of North Hamilton County, aretired coal miner and farmer. Survivors, one daughter, Mrs. BettyHankins, Soddy; four, Ralph Penney, Cecil Penney, William Penney, andJames Penney, all of Soddy; two sisters, Mrs. Lucille Parrott,Graysville, Tennessee; Mrs. Sarah Parrott, Soddy; 10 grandchildren; 12great grandchildren. The body will remain at the funeral home.Arrangements will be announced by Williamson and Sons, Highway 27,Soddy-Daisy.

Penney - Margaret Aldine, age 73, of Rt. 3, Soddy, died in aChattanooga hospital Friday night. She was the daughter of the late Aland Bell Beene Penney, pioneer settlers of North Hamilton County. Sheattended the East Soddy Church of God. She is survived by her husband,Fred Penney of Soddy; four sons, Ralph Penney, Cecil Penney, William A.Penney and James M. Penney all of Soddy; one daughter, Mrs. Betty Hankinsof Soddy; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Cate Ford of Chattanooga and Mrs. LulaMae Cannon of Soddy; one brother, Jack Penney of Soddy; 15 grandchildren;11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral serviceswill be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday from the East Soddy Church of God,conducted by the Reverends Louis Hickman and Roy Eldridge. Intermentwill follow in the Penney family cemetery. Active pallbearers will beHarold Smith, George Smith, John Narromore, Leo Masterson, David Penneyand Billy King. The body will remain at the funeral home. Arrangementsare by Williamson and Son, Highway 27, Soddy-Daisy.

No records have ever been found to substantiate the parentage of MilesPenney. At this time it is thought that his father could be CaptainJames Penn(e)y and his second wife Polly Gann. (The reasoning for thisunproven information is that Miles Penney was living on land purchased byCaptain James Penny when he died in 1887. Capt. James bought this 150acres on Opossum Creek in 1834 from James Coszy.)
The first recorded record of Miles Pinkston Penney is found in theMeigs County, Tennessee Marriage Books. M. P. Penney to Mary Ann Bean,August 31, 1848. Filed August 26, 1848, Meigs Co., TN.
Mary Ann Bean died before 1852, cause unknown. Miles remarried August20, 1852 to Sarah (Sallie) Gann. They were married at her brother,Jefferson Gann's house.
Miles enlisted in the Union Army at Camp Stanley on September 12, 1864for one year in Co. F, 6th Tennessee Mounted Infantry. He was 5ft. 9in.tall, blue eyed with dark hair and complexion. The 6th Tennessee MountedInfantry Regiment, USA was totally organized on Oct. 24, 1864 inChattanooga. Commanding Officer for the District of Etowah was MajorGeneral James B. Steedman, with headquarters at Chattanooga. Theirassignment was to scout the Cumberland Mountains in Tennessee and NorthGeorgia after numerous guerrilla bands that had infested the ares. Fieldofficers were: Lt. Colonel George A. Gowing, Major William H. Bean, andCaptain William Hughes for Company F.
The first official record of the regiment was dated November 30,1864. General Steedman and the major portion of his command waspreparing to join Major General George H. Thomas for the defense ofNashville against General Hood's invasion. At this time Lt. Col. Gowingwas ordered to send 130 men at daybreak to Cleveland, TN where they wereto report to Co. Boughton, commander of the post. On January 21, 1865,General Steedman reports from Chattanooga that he has sent the 6th southtoward Summerville, Georgia via LaFayette. On February 2, at Ringgold,Georgia Col. Gowin reported the previous night he had attacked theguerrilla leader, Gatewood, with 75 men in McLemore's Cove, killing 14and routing the remainder with the loss of most of their horses andarms. In April 1865, with 80 men, Major Bean was reported part of anexpedition to Dalton and Springs Place, Georgia, and to the CoosawattieRiver, lasting from April 1st until the 4th, in the course of which therewere several skirmishes with guerrillas.
The regiment was then placed under the command of Brigadier GeneralH.M. Judah, Commanding the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, with headquartersin Decatur, Georgia. About the last of March the regiment was assignedto scouting North Georgia until the surrender of the Confederate Army atGreensboro, North Carolina. They were then moved to Resaca, Georgiawhere the men were employed as couriers along the railroad to Atlanta. OnJune 18, 1865, the regiment was ordered to Nashville and was mustered outon June 30, 1865. MILES was discharged as a Corporal of Company F.
He fought in Northern Georgia and Reseca with 2nd Lt. Bird Thomas.Other family members at Reseca were: William I. Tomas, George WashingtonPenney, Andrew Jackson Penney, Isom Penney, Elisha Gann (first cousin ofhis wife Sallie), John Gann, James M. Gann, Andy Gann, Jarett Gann,Campbell A. Gann, Franklin Gann, Preston Gann, and a great many more.
Miles drowned on Christmas Day 1877 while crossing the Soddy Creek atClifts Mill Dam. The creek was up, and he lost control of the boat andwent over the dam. He is buried at the Presbyterian Cemetery on OldHixson Pike, Soddy, Hamilton County, Tennessee. His Military Marker reads:

Miles married Sarah Gann on 20 Aug 1852 in Soddy, Hamilton County, Tennessee. Sarah (daughter of Alfred Gann and Susanna) was born in in Hamilton County, Tennessee; died on 27 Jan 1910 in Soddy, Hamilton County, Tennessee; was buried in Soddy Presbyterian Cemetery, Soddy-Daisy, Hamilton County, Tennessee. From her Widow's Pension Application, Pension Certificate Number292,798, for Sarah (Sallie) Penney: 19 August 1890. Her statement isthat she was married to Miles P. Penney on 20 August 1852 by Daniel S.Jones at "My Sister's" (?) Jeffeson Gann's Home. Another statement byElisha Gann (Sallie's first cousin), age 63, states that he waspersonally present when the rites of matrimony were solemnized betweenthem and an eyewitness to the ceremony. He was chosen and acted in thecapacity of one of the waiters of the occasion, and that they weremarried at Jefferson Gann's. Other statements by A. H. Levi and JacobBarnes, who were 55 and 75 years of age, state that Sallie has no meansof support through he daily labor, and that her husband Miles P. Penneywas no doubt accidentally drowned on 25 December 1877 while crossingClifts Mill Dam in a boat. Later statements in this file by John JosephPenney youngest son of Miles and Sallie Penney attests to the death ofhis mother on 27 January, 1910. Sallie also states that her husband's(MILES) first wife is dead.
Sallie died on 27 January 1910 and should be buried next to Miles atthe Presbyterian Cemetery, Soddy, Hamilton County, Tennessee, but thereis no marker. Evan Penney says that she is buried on the right ofChristopher Columbus Penney, again there is no marker.
Sallie's brother Russell Gann was married to Caroline M. Becknell, afull blooded Cherokee.

From the Pension Records of Andrew Jackson Penney: Pension #263756 firstapplication date 7/11/1885 -- Enlisted 2/25/1862, Barberville, KY (withbrother Isom Penney) in Company C, 5th Regiment, Tennessee VolunteerInfantry.
Wounded in the stomach and thigh 5/14/1864 at Buzzard's Roost, Reseca,Georgia. Hospitalized in Chattanooga for three weeks then Knoxville for5 months. Discharged for service ___________is buried at the familycemetery at Igou Ferry Road and Hixon Pike. This is on the land of hisparents, Thomas M. Penney and Malinda Gann.

Andrew enlisted in the Union Army on Februday 25, 1862 at Harrison inCompany C of the Fifth Infantry. He was wounded at Resaca on May 14,1864, but stayed with the company until the end of the war.
