Ulyess Eugene "Gene" Thomas, 81, passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016. He was a lifelong resident of Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee. He was married to his bride of 62 years, Linda Fleming of Rossville, Georgia. He surrendered his life to Jesus Christ at a young age and was a lifelong member of Daisy First Baptist Church (now FBC Soddy-Daisy).
He grew up in South Daisy on the family farm which today encompasses the Soddy-Daisy Veterans Memorial Park. He attended Daisy Elementary and Soddy-Daisy High School (Class of 1953), where he played in the band. From his dad he learned the trade of carpentry. He pursued a career in construction and traveled the Southeast as construction superintendent for R.L. Scobey and Son (Nashville) and Charles and Vinzant (Birmingham) building malls and other commercial projects. One of his favorite projects was the Holiday Inn high-rise and Zayre complex in the Golden Gateway of Chattanooga. He remained a lifelong farmer and outdoorsman. He served as Soddy-Daisy Jaycee President in 1969 when that group led the effort to incorporate the City of Soddy-Daisy. He was inducted to the Colonel Club of the Tennessee Jaycees Volunteer Corps.
Gene was preceded in death by his father, Emmett Leon Thomas, Sr., mother, Pauline Sneed Thomas, sister, Charlotte Siler, and brother, Emmett Leon Thomas, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Fleming Thomas, son, Kenneth Thomas (Chris), daughters Eugenia Thomas and Lanette Thomas, grandchildren Hunter Thomas and Mattie Thomas, nephew Wade Siler (Cindy), and great-nephews Jake Siler (Lauren), Logan Siler (Taylor), and Reed Siler, and special friends Cathy Crawley and Penny Leffew.
Visitation: Williamson and Sons Funeral Home, Soddy-Daisy on Wednesday, June 1st, 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Service: Thursday, June 2nd at 2:00pm in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church, Soddy-Daisy or to Neighborhood Helpers Volunteer Ministry (wheelchair ramps).
