August 17, 1916 - April 27, 2007
Donald Eldridge Downey, 90, of Red Bank, TN, passed away at his home, April 27, 2007. Mr. Downey was a well-known educator in the Hamilton County School System for more than thirty years.
A native of Sale Creek and a member of a pioneering Hamilton county family, he was the son of the late Addison and Burleigh Eldridge Downey and was educated in the Sale Creek schools. He graduated from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and earned his masters degree in Education at the Middle Tennessee State University.
He was an active member of the Soddy United Methodist Church.
Mr. Downey served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during World War II, spending three years in the China-Burma-India theatre at the base of the Himalayas Mountains. He returned from India in 1946.
He and his father sold Allis Chalmers farm machinery along with Plymouth and Dodge automobiles for several years at their store in Dayton, TN.
After his father retired, Mr. Downey, an outstanding craftsman, began teaching at the Soddy Junior High school, teaching mechanical drawing and woodworking. He was a charter member of the Soddy-Daisy Junior High school and retired after thirty years of service.
He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Avice Colston Downey, of Red Bank, daughter, Susan Downey (Bob) Williams, Fayetteville, NC, two sisters, Ruth Jenkins, Chattanooga, Dorothy Hoffman, LaGrande, Oregon and several nieces & nephews.
The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 29, 2007, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Scoggins officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.
