James F. Howell, 86, of Auburn, Ind. and formerly of Decatur County, Ind. passed away at 4:00 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2006 at Sacred Heart Nursing Home in Avilla, Ind.
He was a Vo-Ag and Science Teacher for 33 years retiring from North Decatur High School in 1979. He previously taught at New Point High School and three schools in Mississippi before moving to Decatur County in 1954. He attended Berry College in Rome, Ga. and graduated from Mississippi State in 1950.
He was a member of the Greensburg United Methodist Church, a charter member of Decatur County Teachers Organization, the Rural Couples Club, Decatur County Farm Bureau, and the Ind. & Decatur County Retired Teachers Association and Parkinson?s Support Group.
In 2004, he was recognized as a 50 year member of the New Point Masonic Lodge having served as Secretary for numerous years and Worshipful Master. He was also a member of the Indianapolis Valley Scottish Rite and Lois Chapter of Eastern Star (Associate Worthy Patron 1962).
He served in the Army Air Corp from 1942-1945. He was a B-24 flight engineer & gunner. He completed 50 missions in Southern Europe including missions to the Ploesti Romania Oil Fields in 1944. He is a member of the 456th Bomb Group Association.
James Francis Howell was born April 9, 1920 to Emmett Presley and Ira Johnson Howell in Itawamba Co., Mississippi. He married Jennie Pickett on September 17th, 1944 at Berry College in Rome, Ga.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Emmett Presley and Ira Johnson Howell; two Brothers, Herbert and Hubert Howell; two Sisters, Helen Warr and Pauline Reynolds and one Grandson, Christian James Sukala.
