Bettye Jean Stroud Skillern, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at her home. She was born September 12, 1936, in Calhoun, Georgia. She was a 1955 graduate of Chattanooga Central High School. Bettye married the love of her life, Fred Rees Skillern, on October 30, 1959. They had one son, Fred Rees Skillern, Jr., who passed away in 2012. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Will Stroud and Ruth Cornwell Stroud and brother, Mike Stroud. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Soddy-Daisy. She and her husband started Dixie Souvenirs and worked in it with their son for many years.
Survivors are her loving husband of 64 years, Fred Rees Skillern; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bobbie and Miles Springfield; niece, Jill Menefee (Shawn); nephew, Kurt Springfield (Elizabeth); cousin, Chad Cornwell (Lynn) and their children, Falon, Brock and Piper Cornwell who have been extraordinary caregivers for Bettye and Fred during this time.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Services will be on Friday, September 15, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Soddy-Daisy with Bishop Mitch McClure, Bishop Jackie Penney, Bishop Calvin Nunley and Pastor Peter Choi officiating.
Burial will follow at Presbyterian Cemetery.
