Thomas "Gene" Parker, 87, of Barrackville, passed away Monday (Nov. 7, 2011) at the Louis A.
Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
He was born in Soddy-Daisy, Tenn., on March 17, 1924, a son of the late Thomas Lee and Stella Maude (Worley) Parker.
Gene proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Northern Solomons, Western Pacific. He was a Purple Heart recipient with four Bronze Stars. He had worked for Springer's Appliance as a TV repairman and was a "Jack of all Trades." He was raised in Drakesboro, Ky., and was a 1942 graduate of Drakesboro High School. Gene was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Madelyn Mae (Morris) Parker of Barrackville; two sons, Thomas Robin Parker and his wife Susan of Monongah, and Michael L. Parker and his companion Renee of Dunkard Mill; three daughters, Donna Vilar and her husband Jon of Barrackville, Nancy L. Parker of New Jersey, and Ginger Wilson and her husband Bob of Plum Run; five grandchildren, Tracie McKinney and John of Morgantown, Eric Vilar and his wife Roseann of Atlanta, Josh Wilson, Jared Wilson and his wife Chrissy, and Evan Wilson, all of Plum Run; and two greatgrandchildren, Cameron Wilson and Adrian Vilar.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Virgil Parker, Reed Parker, Warren Parker, Rex Parker and Bob Parker; and a sister, Edna Thompson.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 5-8 p.m. today and from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Thursday with Pastor Janice Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont where the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard will conduct flag-folding rites.
