- [S16] Obituary.
February 24, 1920 - June 28, 2011
A wonderful Christian Lady, Mrs. Bertie Helen Sisson Varner, of Soddy-Daisy, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 in a local hospital. She was ninety-one years old. She was truly a great mother, devoted wife and a friend to many. Proverbs 31 can be said to be a description of her life.
She was born to Sim Sisson & Mattie Coker Sisson Wade of Soddy-Daisy, TN. She was married in 1943 to Estil E. Varner, a member of the Hamilton County Court Clerk’s Office for thirty years. All the former have preceded her in death.
Also preceding her in death were her siblings; Mr. Johnny Sisson, Mr. Everett Sisson and Mrs. Antoinette Sisson Perkinson.
She was a longtime member of the Soddy Church of Christ. She was baptized in 1947 and remained a faithful member until her death. Bertie Helen was a sweet, patient and dedicated Elder’s wife.
Surviving Bertie Helen is her one and only son, Mr. Joseph F. (Betty) Varner. Joe loved his mother with an unceasing, untiring love which she returned two-fold. He spent a little bit of time with her everyday and called her multiple times during his day. He said, “There’s nothing like a mother’s love.” Their favorite game was to tell one another, “I love you” and “I love you more.”
Bertie Helen loved children, as a stay at home mother, she kept many children in Soddy. She loved to listen to stories about them as they got older and also to reminiscence about her time with them. One of her favorite activities was to have the youth from church come visit so that she could take them throughout the house and share stories with them about all the animal mounts on her walls that she happily supplied. You could often hear comments like, “going to Miss Helen’s is like going to a zoo.” At Christmas time, she would place red bows on the mounts as part of her decorations which delighted all that visited her.
She is also survived by a step-granddaughter, Mrs. Jamie (Shane) O’Daniel of Soddy-Daisy, TN; two step-grandsons, Mr. Bobby (Jody) Wright of Hermitage, TN; Mr. Courtney Wright of Chattanooga, TN; five step-grandchildren; two nieces Ms. Jane Cook of Soddy-Daisy, TN, Mrs. Kim (Gary) Reisenwitz of Hazel Green, AL; one nephew, Mr. Randy (Brenda) Perkinson of Cleveland, TN.
The family would like to give a very special thank-you to her caregivers for two years, Mrs. Debbie Fugate, Mrs. Johnni Lou Stewart, Mrs. Dru Hodge, Miss Chasity Todd, Ms. Dee Chilton and Mrs. Libby Lingerfelt.
The funeral and visitation will be on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Soddy Church of Christ with visitation from 5:00 P.M. TO 7:00 P.M. and the funeral at 7:00 P.M. with Minister Bill Greer officiating. Burial will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, July 1, 2011 in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, all memorial contributions be made to: GBN, P.O. Box 23604, Chattanooga, TN 37422.
