161 Ephraim Hixson Cemetery is located in Chattanooga, TN. The land for the cemetery was donated by Ephraim and Margaret Hixson. A sign on the cemetery says “Donated by the children of Ephraim & Margaret Hixson August 15, 1885. The WPA survey of Ephraim Hixson Cemetery done prior to 1939 contained several markers that are now missing or were eligible when this survey was done. Those markers have been added to this survey and so noted. From Highway 153, go north on Hixson Pike approximately one mile and turn left on Austin Road. Turn right on Old Hixson Pike. 164 From her Widow's Pension Application, Pension Certificate Number292,798, for Sarah (Sallie) Penney: 19 August 1890. Her statement isthat she was married to Miles P. Penney on 20 August 1852 by Daniel S.Jones at "My Sister's" (?) Jeffeson Gann's Home. Another statement byElisha Gann (Sallie's first cousin), age 63, states that he waspersonally present when the rites of matrimony were solemnized betweenthem and an eyewitness to the ceremony. He was chosen and acted in thecapacity of one of the waiters of the occasion, and that they weremarried at Jefferson Gann's. Other statements by A. H. Levi and JacobBarnes, who were 55 and 75 years of age, state that Sallie has no meansof support through he daily labor, and that her husband Miles P. Penneywas no doubt accidentally drowned on 25 December 1877 while crossingClifts Mill Dam in a boat. Later statements in this file by John JosephPenney youngest son of Miles and Sallie Penney attests to the death ofhis mother on 27 January, 1910. Sallie also states that her husband's(MILES) first wife is dead.
Sallie died on 27 January 1910 and should be buried next to Miles atthe Presbyterian Cemetery, Soddy, Hamilton County, Tennessee, but thereis no marker. Evan Penney says that she is buried on the right ofChristopher Columbus Penney, again there is no marker.
Sallie's brother Russell Gann was married to Caroline M. Becknell, afull blooded Cherokee.

Harold Eugene Penney Dies At Age47; Air Force Vet
Harold Eugene Penney, Sr., 47, of No. 5 Walker Ave., Fort Oglethorpe,Georgia, died Thursday in a local hospital. Mr. Penney, a lifelongChattanooga area resident was a former employee with Swithchings Inc., inDetroit, Michigan. He was an 11 year veteran of the U. S. Air Force,serving during the Korean War. Mr. Penney was a member of the CalvaryNazarene Church and the Fidelity Lodge 558 F&AM.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Eaves Penney; two daughters,Mrs. Deborah Ann Kinney of Lansing, Michigan, and Miss Sharon ReneePenney of Fort Oglethorpe. Three sons, Harold E. Penney, Jr., andKenneth Dale Penney both of Detroit, Michigan, and Michael DeWayne Penneyof Sterling Heights, Michigan; two grandchildren. Parents, Mr. and Mrs.James Edward Penney of Wetumpka, Alabama; sister Patricia Nation ofDallas, Texas. Five brothers, Troy Penney and Jack Penney both ofWetumpka, Alabama, Marvin Penney, Jim Penney and John Penney, all ofChattanooga; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the South Crest Chapel ofLane Funeral Home with the Reverend J. Lake Gibson and the Reverend GlennSwagerty officiating. 183 J. J. Clift, farmer, and clerk in the Soddy Coal Company's store, was born May 28, 1838, in Hamilton County, where he now resides. He is the youngest of seven children born to William and Nancy A. (Brooks) Clift. William Clift was born December 5, 1795, in Greene County, Tenn., and came to Hamilton County about 1828. He organized the Seventh Tennessee Regiment, of which he was colonel, enlisted in the fall of 1861, and was a very warm supporter of the stars and stripes. Hearing that they were threatened by the Confederates, this regiment disbanded and fled to Kentucky. He was captured while returning from carrying some dispatches from Gen. Burnside to Gen. Rosecrans. He was taken to Atlanta, where he was retained in captivity about four mouths. He then made his escape in February, 1864, and reached home the same month. He was magistrate of his district eighteen years, and was also colonel of the State militia. He was greatly harassed by the Confederates during the late war, but to the last remained a stanch Union man. He was also a very fine business man, and when he died his effects were estimated to be worth $1,000,000. He died February 17, 1886, aged ninety. Mrs. Clift was born February 22, 1795, in East Tennessee; she died August 17, 1847. Our subject received a fair education in the common schools of Hamilton County, and finished at Sale Creek Academy. He married Miss Elizabeth L. Reveley, of Dayton, Tenn. Mrs. Clift was born February 12, 1843, and died February 12, 1870, leaving three children: Nancy A., W. Robert, and Elizabeth J., now attending the Female College, at Rogersville, Tenn. Mr. Clift and family are members of the Presbyterian Church. In politics Mr. Clift is a Democrat, casting his first presidential vote for John Bell. He was elected justice of the peace in 1876, and still holds that office. He has given universal satisfaction in the discharge of the duties of this office. He has been deacon of the church to which he belongs for the past eight years. 184 J. W. Clift, bookkeeper and manager of the Soddy Coal Company store since 1874, and one of the principal stockholders of the same, was born in 1828. He is a son of William and Nancy A. (Brooks) Clift, and was born and reared in Hamilton County. He was educated principally at the common schools, and attended two terms at Harrison Academy. In 1849 he married Miss McKenzie, a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth F. (Huston) McKenzie. Nine children were the fruits of this union, six of whom are living: Nancy E. (Mrs. Miles); William, bookkeeper for the Soddy Coal Company; Nina Wallace, Joseph W., Aldine, Wingenund (deceased), Bruce and James. Mr. Clift is of Scotch-Irish descent. In 1861 he enlisted in the war and served almost continuously until the final surrender. He was made captain of Company A, Thirty-sixth Tennessee Infantry, and upon the reorganization he came home for a short time. He enlisted shortly after in Capt. Starne's company, Fourth Tennessee Cavalry, and was promoted to a lieutenancy, and shortly thereafter detached and placed upon duty in the adjutant-general's department where he served until the close of the war. He was paroled at Meridian, Miss., May 13, 1865. Mr. Clift is actively engaged in several mining and manufacturing enterprises. He is one of the principal stockholders in the Soddy Coal Company, Walden's Ridge Coal Company, of Sale Creek, Tennessee, and in the Owita Coal Company, of Arkansas, and he is also connected with the rolling mill, at Chattanooga. The Soddy Coal Mines were first opened by a company of Welshmen from Ohio in 1867. Mr. Clift is a Democrat in politics, and he and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church. Penney - James Edward, 86, of Wetumpka, Alabama, died Saturday in ahospital there. Survivors include his wife, Imogene Penney; four sons,Jack and James A. Penney, Wetumpka, Marvin and John Penney, Chattanooga;daughter, Patricia Busby, Dallas; brother, Ray Penney, Chattanooga;sister, Beulah Chappin, Lansing, Michigan; 14 grandchildren and 21great-children. Services were at 11 a.m. CDT Monday in the funeral homechapel with the Reverend Travis Connell officiating. Burial was inPineview Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Gassett Funeral Home,Wetumpka.

187 James Henry was a witness in the State vs William Buckhannon April 26,1815 (Rhea County Tennessee Minute Docket C. 1813-1815). Tuesday July25, 1815 was appointed overseer of road from William Henry's to E.Henry's in room of Philip Paine. (Rhea County Minute Docket C Court ofPleas and Quarter Session, July 1813-July 1815, page 140) He went toBibb County, Alabama with his brothers about 1819 and is found in courtrecords there. 188 John E. Lloyd, is a native of Wales, and came to America in the spring of 1860. He spent the first two years, after landing in this coun­try, in traveling quite extensively throughout the United States, prospect­ing for a company of mining capitalists at Philadelphia. He then set­tled at Dupont, Penn., as superintendent of mines belonging to Geo. Dupont & Co. He was with the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company for three years as contractor. In 1872 and 1873 he was a member of the Tuscaloosa Mining and Transportation Company who were prospecting with a view to opening up some coal lands in Tuscaloosa County, Ala. He then moved to Rising Fawn, where he was engaged by a New York company, who were engaged in operating the Rising Fawn Iron Furnaces. He then came to Chattanooga and engaged in the real estate business. From here he went to Fort Payne, Ala., to open up the Beson Gap Coal Mines for a New York company, and this proved another failure. He afterward engaged in land surveying in DeKalb County, and moved from there to Soddy, where he has since remained. . He was superintendent of the mines of Dayton in 1882 and 1883 under John H. Furgason, after which he went to Texas and Arkansas to open up mines for Carson & Louis, of Weatherford, Tex. For the past two years he has been located at Soddy, where he has been looking after the ventilation of the mines owned by The Soddy Coal Company. In 1886 Mr. Lloyd was the Demo­cratic candidate for the Legislature from this Legislative district, cutting down the great majority by which the county is usually carried to 200. During the late war be commanded a company in Fitz John Porter's army corps. He engaged in all the battles and skirmishes in which his regiment took part up to the time of his separation from the army. He married Miss Annie Morgan in 1870. She was a native of Wales, and came to America, September, 1870. This union resulted in the birth of five children three of whom are living: Katie, Arthur, Emma, Eudora, Theophilus (deceased) and Elizabeth (deceased). Mr. Lloyd is a member of the Congregational Church as was also his wife. He bas been quite a successful geologist and practical miner, and has walked over every foot of the mineral lands of East Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama. His father lived and died in Wales. He was a soldier in the Peninsular war, engaged in the battle of Waterloo, and ranked as colonel in the Brit­ish Army. He died when our subject was quite small.

189 Joseph died in late October of 1895, and is buried at Hall's Cemeteryat Gipsy, Bollinger County, Missouri. Almeda is buried to his left in anunmarked grave. His son Andrew Looney is buried next to him. There isalso an unmarked grave outlined with rocks. This is probably Andrew'swife, Ibb Ellen Kerr Looney.
Joseph served in the Civil War and fought for the Union. He was aPrivate in Company I, 2nd Infantry Regiment of the 2nd TennesseeVolunteers. Most of Company I enrolled at Sale Creek, Hamilton County,Tennessee and mustered n at Cumberland Ford, Kentucky, 28 February 1862.Muster out date not known. Muster rolls of the regiment are defective, alarge portion of them were captured along with the Regiment atRogersville on 6 November 1863. In his declaration for pension, madeJuly 12 1893, Joseph stated he was hurt by a wagon turning over while ona retreat from Cumberland Gap to the Ohio River when in service.Physical description was given as 5'11" with light complexion, light hairand blue eyes.
Almeda filed for and received a pension for Joseph's Civil Wayservice. On the pension application the mustering out date is listed as31 October 1864. Age 20 (which would make his birth date 1844) andother personal descriptions not of record. A very interesting medicalnote: Medical records show him treated July 25 to August 31, 1864 fortraumatic stricture of the urethra. Says when a boy was crushed abouthis privates in fall between two millstones. Surgery was performedincluding a circumcision and removal of a tumor.
According to Dessie Looney Perkins, her grandfather, Joseph Looney,left home at age 14. None of the children or grandchildren knew anythingabout the Looney family.

193 M. H. Clift., attorney, of the firm of Cooke, Clift & Cooke, is a native of Hamilton County, and the son of Col. William Clift, a native of Greene County, Tenn. The father was reared in Knox County, and came to Hamilton County about 1825, residing at Soddy until his death in 1866. He was colonel of the State militia many years, and during the war was colonel in the Federal Army. From 1848 to 1855 he was commissioner of improvement for the United States Government. The mother, Nancy (Brooks) Clift, was a native of Knox County, and died in this county in 1847. Our subject was reared and educated in Hamilton County, and at the commencement of hostilities enlisted in the Fourth Tennessee Confederate Cavalry. He was paroled at Columbus, Ga., being at that time on Debrill's staff. He was admitted to the bar just prior to the war, and at its termination came to Chattanooga and began practicing his profession in the firm of Wallace & Clift, where be remained one year. After practicing alone for a few months he became a member of the firm of Clift & McRee, then Clift & Bate, then Clift, Bate & Cooke, then Clift & Cooke, and finally, January 1, 1887, the firm of Cooke, Clift & Cooke was formed. Our subject is president of the Soddy Coal Company and Walden Ridge Coal Company, also director in the Mutual Gas Company and the Home Insurance Company. In 1867 be married Miss A. C. Cooke, who bore him two children; she died in 1876. In 1883 he married Miss Florence Parrott, of Cartersville, Ga., and to this union have been born two children, both living. Mr. Clift is a member of the Masonic fraternity and of the K. of P. Goodspeed's "History of East Tennessee" 1887

194 M. L. Jenkins, superintendent of the Soddy Coal Mines, was born in December, 1842, and is one of twelve children born to John and Ann (Lewis) Jenkins. The parents were both inhabitants of Wales. The father is still living, and is eighty years old. The mother died about 1855, while still quite young. Our subject received his education in the subscription schools of Wales. He began mining as a day laborer at the age of twelve, and by his own energy and ability has arisen to his pres­ent position. He came to America in 1868, and located first in Pennsyl­vania, where he remained three years, and then went to Mahanoy City. In 1872 he came to Soddy, where he has since remained. He married Miss Elenor Lloyd in Wales. She is the daughter of Evan and Cather­ine Lloyd. Mrs. Jenkins was born about 1850, and by her marriage became the mother of six children: Evan (deceased), Hester, Catherine, Maggie (deceased), Abram and John. Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins are members of the Congregational Church. Mr. Jenkins is a. Republican in politics, a Master Mason, a K. of H. and a member of the I. O. O. F. Dr S. W. Jenkins Dies At Bakewell
Union Veteran Fought With Tennessee Regiment
Was Medical Examiner
Dr Samuel W. Jenkins, 84, died at his home in Bakewell yesterday morning after a long illness.
Dr Jenkins was born March 19, 1848 and was a Union veteran of the War Between the States , being a member of Company L, Third Tennesse regiment. He served for more than three years and was one of the 2,120 soldiers on the boat Sultan when it was destroyed during the war on the Mississippi river.
Dr Jenkins was captured at Sulphur Trussel, Ala., and was in prison for six months at Andersonville. He helped to build the pontoon bridge across the Tennessee river here during the war and was also in the Battle of Orchard Knob. He was a practicing physician for more than sixty years and was pension examiner for the Southern railroad under Dr George Baxter and Dr W. A. Applegate of Chattanooga.
Dr Jenkins had lived in the section of Soddy and Bakewell for more than fifty years and was a charter member of the Masonic lodge of Soddy.
Dr Jenkins is survived by seven sons, E. A., S. W. Jr. And William, all of Soddy; Arthur of Emory Gap, Tenn. and John, Eddie and Theodore Jenkins of Bakewell; nine daughters, Mrs T. J. Welch, Red Bank; Mrs Elizabeth Woods, Toledo, Ohio; Miss Grace Jenkins, Chattanooga; Mrs Harry Sanders, Chattanooga; Mrs Walter Constigan, Cincinnati, Ohio; Mrs Jessie Ledford and Misses Glenna and Sallie Maude Jenkins, all of Bakewell; and Mrs Crystal Minnis of North Carolina; also a large number of grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Congregational church at Soddy, with the Reverend A. L. DeJarnette in charge, assisted by Reverend W. O. Peeples. Interment with be in Varner cemetery, with Hallett's in charge. The Masonic order will have charge of the services at the grave.
