117 | Citizen Cemetery is the oldest Cemetery in Chattanooga. It is believed that it began to be used before or during 1837. A tract of land surrounding the original graves was purchased in 1838 from Col. William Lindsay, an officer of the US Army stationed at Ross’s Landing during the Cherokee War. The city record reports that the 104 acres west of Georgia Avenue were purchased for $75 an acre. Citizen Cemetery is located between the eight hundred and nine hundred block of East 4th and 5th Streets in downtown Chattanooga. This survey is a combination of a survey conducted by Charles Lusk in 1938 and the Works Project Administration survey in 1939. Mr. Lusk added several notes to his survey from Zella Armstrong’s “History of Chattanooga”. The listings from the WPA survey are noted. This survey was compiled by Dennis C. Wilson in July 2001. | Source (S44)
